Seven years ago, FPC formed a 12- member Board of Deacons. The Session was reduced from 30 elders to 18 elders. Two session committees, Caring and Congregational Life, became Deacon Committees. I was given responsibility for developing the Deacon Ministry. With the aid of a local consultant we created a mission and vision statement:  "We live God’s love by compassionately serving other"s and "We see an active, spirit-filled congregation where there are no strangers and everyone loves the Lord by serving others."

Along with our mission and vision, we formulated four ministry objectives: Those in need will be comforted. Everyone will feel connected, valued, known and loved. Those who visit FPC will be offered a warm, friendly, Christ-centered welcome. Those outside the FPC community will see God’s love in action through our people-oriented service.

At every Deacon meeting we recite our mission and vision statements. They are always before us, leading and guiding our decisions. Periodically we review our statements and objectives and make the appropriate adjustments.

The original two session committees morphed into 12 ministry teams, which have given birth to several new ministries. More than 100 members are involved in one or more of our Deacon Ministry Teams.  As a result, we have become a more caring, supportive community of faith that serves others in the church and in our community.
